Hey there #12er and #fitfluential friends. Growing up as the fat kid then the fat teenager then the fat young adult was really, really rough. I was made fun of A LOT. Kids would make the BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! noise when I walked past and it hurt me so much. Kids are cruel and if you have an overweight child, please remember to tell them every day something great about themselves. I’d go home after being made fun of and listen to Whitney Houston’s “The Greatest Love of All.” I hoped, believed, wished, that if I just sand that song loud enough, hard enough, strong enough, with enough feeling that maybe self love would come to me. It didn’t. But it made me feel comforted in that moment when I was too sad or depressed or embarrassed to tell my mother about what was going on with me at school. I still, to this day, struggle with truly feeling as though I love and value myself. “Learning to love yourself, is the greatest love of all.” That’s why my #12er challenge has been to look at myself in the eye every day for one minute and tell myself that I [...]

I’m moving to the Windy city in about a week and to continue my fitness journey I need some help. I’m looking for an affordable gym in Chicago or the best place in Chicago to workout. I’m finally getting over my fear of people looking at me while working out outside. Yes, it’s a weird fear, but it’s one of my fears. LOL all you want, I’m sure someone can relate. If you’re from Chicago or have spent any amount of time working out in Chicago, I’d love to know some of the best places to workout and where to find an affordable gym in the city. Any help is absolutely appreciated.

Hello there, friend! I hope you’re having an amazing 2012 thus far. We’re one month in and I’m excited to begin this new challenge. I’m also quite terrified. I mentioned in my January challenge update that I met up with a friend at Growth Conference, and our conversation inspired my February challenge. This, in my opinion, is an even bigger challenge than drinking 31-days of green smoothies (which if not for the nutrient deficiency, I would have rocked!) This challenge isn’t an external physical challenge like #patriotpushups, but it will benefit me physically. This is more of an emotional, psychological, spiritual kind of challenge that may in the end help to also shed the excess weight. The Body Diaries was always meant to be so much more than a weight loss blog. It was created for personal transformation in every sense, not just physically. So what exactly is this non-physical February #12er challenge? The challenge is: I have to look myself in the eyes for one minute every single day — all 29 days — of February and say, “I love you” to myself. I can look at a photo, a mirror, in my webcam, I just need to SEE [...]

Hi there, #patriotpushups #12er #fitblog #fitfluential friends. January was an interesting month for me. I started out super strong. I hit the gym almost daily and on days I didn’t get to the gym I worked out at home. I participated in the #patriotpushups challenge where I was required to complete 6,347 Push-Ups in 29 Days. I participated in the #12er challenge (formerly known as #12in12) and challenged myself to drink nothing but green smoothies for the entire month of January — that’s right, 31 days of green smoothies morning, noon, and night. This was inspired by the film Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead (which you can watch for free on Hulu. I was also interviewing for a pretty awesome new position at a place I worked in 2007/2008 that I really wanted. I attended Entrepreneur Magazine’s Growth Conference where I met up with a friend and had one of the best conversations I’ve had in a really long time which inspired my February #12er challenge. I want you to know that I am a conference, training, and workshop junkie and any opportunity to attend or participate, I’m there! If it’s free that’s even more awesome. And I went to [...]

Sorry I’ve been away. I’m at my grandparents house with no wireless internet access and a grandfather who keeps asking me if I’m done on the computer yet (designing his site.) I have a massive headache, I feel tired and uncoordinated. I don’t think I’m getting enough calories – I’ll adjust my green smoothies to accommodate. I’ve completed 707 #patriotpushups. I’m way behind some others, but I’ll make them up. I now have to do 226 per day vs. the 219 I initially was going to do. I’m still only drinking green smoothies and water. I did have a piece of sugar-free gum today. It was like Christmas. I don’t think that’s cheating, right? I mean, I didn’t swallow the gum. If you think it’s cheating then… well… whatever. I don’t. I just wanted to post a quick note to let you know that I haven’t abandoned you. I’ll be back with posts on an upcoming television show about fat people and my thoughts on the childhood obesity drama in Georgia.

#fitblog #12in12 #fitfluential & #patriotpushup friends, lend me your ears… er… eyes. For the past 4 days, my diet has been all green smoothies all the time (savory smoothies have been lightly warmed and eaten like soup) and lots — I mean a whole lot — of water. I’ve had my strength tested from day one! This is surely a month of challenges. Here’s the short list: Mom forced me to take her to MY favorite place to get a turkey burger and proceeded to eat the burger and the fries in front of me. My cousin asked me to take her to the store where I was met by my love, kettlecorn, but not just any kettle corn. This kettle corn was covered in chocolate (I’ve never had it like that before.) The same cousin ate food that smelled incredible in my car (she gets a pass because she’s 9 months pregnant.) Saturday we’re celebrating my mom’s 52nd birthday at a Chinese buffet style restaurant and I’ll sip water and tea. In 2 weeks I’m going to Las Vegas and Vegas has all of my favorite restaurants (Firefly, Paymons, Lotus of Siam.) I go to the first two restaurants [...]

Hello again #fitblog, #fitfluential, #12in12 friends! I’ve just had something awesome thrown my way. My relationship with my boyfriend, 24 Hour Fitness, comes to an end in February (break up just in time for Valentines day) and I need to figure out if I like the direction our relationship is going in and renew my commitment OR explore other options. Well, a grand opportunity came up today on twitter when my beloved @AlexandraFunFit of the awesome blog funandfit.org (I profiled her and her twin sister in my favorite health and fitness bloggers countdown) told me about this really cool opportunity to honor the Troops AND win a year long Anytime Fitness membership (perfect timing for breaking up with my current gym boyfriend.) So, I read her Push-Ups for Patriots post and I cried! I cried for two reasons: 1) Because I have so much love and respect for the men and women who serve our military. My ex-boyfriend (real one, not 24 hour fitness) served in Afghanistan, Iraq, and was a guard at Guantanamo Bay. Though he and I are no longer together, I am so thankful that he returned home safe. But what of the many others who did [...]

#fitblog #12in12 #fitfluential friends, what’s up? Today was really, really rough. First, my mother wanted me to take her to get a burger at a place whose social media campaign I’m running and they also just happen to have the most amazing turkey burger ever! No, seriously, it’s the most amazing in the short history of the turkey burger. So, I had to take her. Plus, how can you say no to your mother? You don’t! That’s how. She knows I’m doing the 31 day green smoothie challenge and yet, she insisted on asking me to take her to my favorite place and sip on water while watching her eat their food. It wasn’t even the watching that got to me, it was the smell. As soon as you walk up to my favorite place, the smell of grilled onions and jalapenos drifts towards your nose and you involuntarily begin to drool. So that was torture #1. Torture #2 came when I took my very, very pregnant cousin to the store while her husband is away. When we entered the store what am I greeted by? A bag of kettle corn. Kettle corn is the ONLY popcorn I eat. I [...]

Hey there #12in12, #fitblog, and #fitfluential friends. I’ve had this butternut squash just hanging out on my counter for longer than I care to admit. Last night before heading off to bed, I kept thinking I wonder if I can make a butternut squash smoothie for this challenge. So I took to Google — because Google knows all — and found several recipes for Butternut Squash Smoothies and decided to create my own. Most of the others used added sugar or added milk or yogurt and I didn’t want any of that as it defeats the purpose of this green smoothie challenge (to eat only fruits, veggies, and nuts in liquid form.) One recipe called for steamed butternut squash but I slit it in half and roasted mine in the oven. Here’s my not-so-green Butternut Squash smoothie recipe Butternut Squash Banana Ground Cinnamon Ground Ginger Water Directions: Cut butternut squash in half length-wise Place on a cookie sheet cut side down Bake in the oven at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until tender (if you can stick a fork in it, it’s tender) Allow to cool Scoop butternut squash out of the shell and into the blender Add water, [...]

Hi #fitblog, #12in12 and #fitfluential friends who have come over from twitter. If you didn’t come from twitter and you just randomly typed in a search query into your preferred search engine then again, I thank you for being here. So I’m doing Fitarella’s 12-in-12 Challenge and I’ve chosen to challenge myself to a 31-day Green Smoothie Challenge and a minimum of 20 minutes of exercise a day. My traditional green smoothie has been a blend of 60/40 vegetable to fruit ratio. I love sweet berry filled green smoothies. It’s like having dessert all day — and I LOVE DESSERT. They’re so good! So when I decided to try my hand at a savory green smoothie, I was really very scared. So, what’s in this super green thing that has these interesting black flecks that look like pepper? Brussels Sprouts Spinach 1 clove of Garlic Black Eyed Peas Juice of 1/2 a Lemon Water That’s it. After blending it all up I decided I could not — no, really, I couldn’t — eat/drink this thing cold. So I put it in a sauce pan and heat it up a little bit with more water. I was terrified. I’ve never had [...]
